ATTEMPT AT DOG LAKE

Dog Lake

We attempted to hike to Dog Lake on June 1st. Its up our neighboring Big Cottonwood Canyon and the trail head is at 7,120 feet and the lake sits at 8,740 ft. Its a beautiful trail that hugs the Butler Fork for the first 2 miles, has lots of open meadows, and tons of Aspens. We crossed the creek 5 times and with all the snow melt it was moving pretty fast. However, due to our MASSIVE amount of snow we recieved this year, the Aspens still havent bloomed, the flowers are non existent and we hit a lot of snow toward the ridge. Due to all the snow we were unable to find the trail to the lake, which was only .5 mile, but it is surrounded by so many trees we couldnt spot it from the ridge and rather then blazing our own trail we decided to try it another day when the snow is gone and everything is in bloom. Lots of signs of Moose in the area, however we never saw any....

We spotted this snow cornice. Its probably 10-15 ft high and these
are things that cause avalanches during the winter.
